Wolves face major blow for Arsenal after squad update announced

Romain Saiss has been named in Morocco’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Morocco are one of the pre-tournament favourites and Saiss will captain his country out in Cameroon.

Their first game of the tournament is scheduled to come against Ghana on January 10, before they play Comoros on January 14 and Gabon on January 18.

If Morocco advance to the latter stages of the competition Saiss might not return to England until the second week of February.

Players competing in AFCON were expected to join up with their countries on Boxing Day, but Wolves’ match against Watford on Sunday has now been postponed due to Covid-19 cases within the visitors’ camp.

Wolves will now hold talks with Morocco over keeping Saiss for Tuesday’s game with Arsenal, which is scheduled to kick-off at 12:30pm.

Some countries competing in AFCON have even permitted their players to feature in New Year’s Day games for Premier League clubs.

Saiss has become an integral part of Wolves’ team this season having started every Premier League game under Bruno Lage.

The defender netted the winning goal at Brighton last week and was affectionately dubbed ‘The Moroccan Maldini’ by Lage afterwards.

Saiss is one of just three centre-backs available to Lage at present due to injuries to Willy Boly and Yerson Mosquera.

Boly is also due to be involved in AFCON with the Ivory Coast, but his recent muscular problems have cast doubt over his participation.

In addition to Saiss, Morocco have named three more English-based players in their squad.
